Christmas Message

As a teenager in London I would spend hours each week waiting for trains and buses to take me on journeys. The waiting was hard and it would often frustrate me. However, these pauses were an enforced chance when I was in the midst of a busy life to stop and reflect on the important things in life. Often it be a time when I would remember to pray and recognize that God was there with me in the midst of all the good and bad things which were happening in life. Advent, similarly is supposed to be this for us – a time to stop and reflect and realize the truth of the Christmas message for us all.

Yet I find that the pressure and busyness at this time of year is worse than ever. Buying presents, sending cards, putting up decorations, Christmas parties, Christmas fairs etc, etc; and in the midst of this the need to spend time with family and friends. And yet every year, as predictably as planning to buy all my Christmas presents by September and actually buying them on December 23rd, I think, “Now THIS is the year when I really will enter into Advent. When I will take time and find the space in the midst of all of the busyness to think about what advent and Christmas is really all about.”

So, what is it all about? Matthew in his account of the birth of Jesus, speaks of a title which was to be given to Jesus at his birth. Immanuel. It means “God with us.” And that is what Christmas is supposed to be all about, to remind us that we have an amazing promise in Jesus. God is not distant or uncaring of the problems we face. He doesn’t keep us at arms length. Instead he comes to us as a child born in a manger, he lives a human life and dies and rises again – all so that we can know that God is with us. Wherever our journey takes us, whatever we are waiting for, God is there with us

So this year can I invite you to take time and find the space in the midst of all of the busyness to think about what advent and Christmas is really all about. In the midst of all the busyness and buying to stop, pause and engage with God. Bring along the family to our Carol Service or Christingle Christmas Eve or any of our other services and be reminded of the reason for the season – the birth of Jesus who us Immanuel, God with us.

May God bless you all this Christmas
